Cool Album of the Week: Julia Jacklin - Crushing

Short article for today! A really wonderful album and one of my favorites of 2019 for sure! I know that this blog format is dying so I couldn't be happier that you're reading this right now. Thanks! Hope you enjoy - - - - - - - - - - -

A stunning leap to a distinctive voice within this genre, Australian Julia Jacklin dives further into her own psyche for a narrative-based record that's as stunningly beautiful as it is intimate. The opening 1-2-3 punch is one of my favorites so far of the year - the dark, sparse tale of breakup in the opening "Body," the slow buildup and climax of chill-inducing beauty "Head Alone," followed by the lite-punk edge of "Pressure to Party." Lyrically more involved than many of her peers, each song is a rich story with contrasting full and spare arrangements.

Not one to leave us unsatisfied after the opening, Jacklin has another 1-2-3 punch near the end with "Good Guy," "You Were Right," and "Turn Me Down." These tracks show another great contrast through transitioning between wavy layering of textures, expressive rhythmic drive, and finally strained and slow with a touch of reverb and anguish. Ending with the solo acoustic "Comfort" proves the highlight of Crushing is both her vocals and songwriting, leaving Jacklin with her strongest set of music to date and promising potential to break into full-on star status.

Check it out! A guaranteed hit for all your listening desires <3
